Carbon footprint labels involving traffic lights foster sustainable food choices

چکیده
One reason consumers buy unsustainable products is that judging the environmental impact of food choices very difficult. This study examines whether using carbon footprint labels to convey relevant information increases tendency choose low-carbon items. In a pre-registered online experiment, 1,126 participants chose between low-CO2 and high-CO2 14 times (e.g., chili sin carne versus con or margarine butter). The two alternatives were either presented without (control), with label communicating alternative’s relative sustainability within its category (traffic light), absolute emissions in kg CO2 (absolute), both (combined). results show traffic light combined increased chance choosing (versus high-CO2) item. There no interactions concern / cognitive reflection. Our research contributes discussion on effectiveness practical relevance by testing specific design demonstrating limited emissions.

Food transportation issues and reducing carbon footprint
Transportation is the largest end-use contributor toward global warming in the United States and many other developed countries. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE 2009 ) calculates that CO 2 emissions from transportation surpassed two billion metric tons in 2007. Yet a survey by Golicic et al. ( 2010 ) fi nds that fewer than 10% of Fortune 500 companies have addressed the environmental impacts...

متن کاملHow does consumer knowledge affect environmentally sustainable choices? Evidence from a cross-country latent class analysis of food labels.
This paper examines consumers' knowledge and lifestyle profiles and preferences regarding two environmentally labeled food staples, potatoes and ground beef. Data from online choice experiments conducted in Canada and Germany are analyzed through latent class choice modeling to identify the influence of consumer knowledge (subjective and objective knowledge as well as usage experience) on envir...
متن کاملA Step toward a Sustainable Diet by Reducing Carbon Footprint: A Case Study in Iran
Introduction: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have caused environmental effects. Food production is one of the sources of GHGs. This study aimed to suggest dietary scenarios for decreasing GHG emissions. Materials and Methods: GHG emissions in the target population of Urmia city, Northwest Iran, were investigated using a modeling approach. Three dietary scenarios were modeled and analyzed to ev...
متن کاملTraining impulsive choices for healthy and sustainable food.
Many people find it hard to change their dietary choices. Food choice often occurs impulsively, without deliberation, and it has been unclear whether impulsive food choice can be experimentally created. Across 3 exploratory and 2 confirmatory preregistered experiments we examined whether impulsive food choice can be trained. Participants were cued to make motor responses upon the presentation o...
